What is Re-Sanding?

Also referred to as beach reclamation or beach nourishment, re-sanding is the process of replenishing eroded beaches with sand from other sources.  It involves not only the addition of new sand but also the reshaping of the beach profile to enhance storm resilience and promote environmental stability.

Several Cities in California have already made efforts to re-sand:

San Clemente

In 2024, the city approved a $2 million emergency project to replace lost sand. The city is also working with the federal government and the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) to place sand on the beaches. Measure BB, a sales tax increases to generate funds for future sand replenishment projects was recently passed.

Oceanside

The city is piloting an innovative engineering solution that involves identifying potential local sand sources and/or developing methods to deliver sand from the Camp Pendleton Boat Basin on an ongoing basis.

Carlsbad

Carlsbad has participated in two previous SANDAG* led projects to replenish beach sand, and the next project is tentatively scheduled for 2027.

Solana Beach

In Solana Beach, the impacts of coastal erosion have resulted in the narrowing of sandy beaches and the encroachment of waves directly against the bluffs. This threatens public and private infrastructure as well as beach safety. The primary goal of the beach sand project is to restore sand supply to the shoreline to promote long term coastal resiliency in the city and region.
